James Brewin (BMBS, BMedSci, MSc, FRCS Urol) is a consultant urological surgeon who specialises in the management of men with enlarged prostates (BPH/LUTS) and the treatment of kidney stones.

In 2014 Mr Brewin was the first surgeon in Wessex to establish laser prostate surgery (HoLEP) – this procedure is used to treat men with enlarged prostates and has fewer side effects than a traditional TURP operation. He has now performed over 1000 HoLEP operations and has trained many other surgeons. He also offers minimally invasive options for men with enlarged prostates including Aquablation, Urolift and Rezum so is able to offer you a range of treatment best suited to your situation.

Mr Brewin also specialises in stone surgery and offers a variety of treatments for patients with urinary tract stones including lithotripsy (ESWL), flexible and rigid ureteroscopy and PNCL (keyhole surgery to remove large kidney stones).

Mr Brewin was appointed as a consultant urological surgeon Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust in 2014. He graduated from The University of Nottingham Medical School in 2001 and undertook his five-year speciality training in London and South East England training at Guy’s and St Thomas’, Kings College Hospital, Epsom and Brighton. His training included a year with the Stone Unit at Guys Hospital.

Max Johnston (MB BCh, FRCS Urol, PhD) is a consultant urological surgeon who specialises in the management of men with enlarged prostates (BPH/LUTS), prostate cancer and the treatment of kidney stones.

In 2020 Mr Johnston was trained by Mr Brewin, the first surgeon in Wessex to establish laser prostate surgery (HoLEP). He now has a high-volume HoLEP practice and is involved in the training of other surgeons. He also offers minimally invasive surgery for men with enlarged prostates including Aquablation, iTIND and Rezum. He is proud to offer a comprehensive portfolio of treatments for enlarged prostates in partnership with Mr Brewin.

Mr Johnston also specialises in diagnostics for prostate cancer and kindey stone surgery. He performs local and general anaesthetic prostate biopsies which always follow a high-quality MRI scan. Mr Johnston was appointed as a consultant urological surgeon at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust in 2022. He graduated from The University of Cardiff Medical School in 2010. He studied for a PhD in surgical patient safety and outcomes, gaining his Doctorate in 2015. He undertook seven years of surgical training in the Kent, Surrey, Sussex and then the Wessex region.
